Woolworths Chai / Chai
When the work is chai, the tea begins.
Overview
Woolworths Chai / Chai is a self-initiated campaign built around the double meaning of the word “chai.” It refers to tea, but in everyday South African language it can also mean that something is finished, done or completely over.
The campaign positions Woolworths Chai as the reward that follows effort: the cup you make once the emails are sent, the housework is finished or the day has taken everything out of you.
The Observation
There is a particular moment of peace that arrives after finishing a demanding task. The work is complete, the pressure lifts and you can finally sit down.
South Africans already use “chai” to describe something that is finished. Connecting that familiar expression to Woolworths Chai created a piece of wordplay that felt obvious once discovered.
The Creative Idea
Position Woolworths Chai as the reward people reach for when the work is finally chai.
The idea uses locally recognised language to connect the product to a familiar emotional moment: the relief of knowing that the difficult part is over.
The Execution
The campaign was developed across social-media and print executions. Each piece captures the aftermath of a completed task. The emails have been sent, the housework has been completed, the traffic has been survived or a demanding day has finally come to an end.
The copy delivers the joke, while the imagery provides evidence that the work is finished. Woolworths Chai then enters as the quiet reward at the end of each scenario.
Art Direction
The imagery focuses on completed tasks rather than showing people actively working. An empty chair, a cleared space or a recently abandoned desk creates the feeling that someone has just finished and stepped away.
The layouts are clean, spacious and product-led, allowing the wordplay to remain immediate. Soft, comfortable imagery communicates the release that follows effort, while carefully grounded product packs give the tea a physical presence within each scene.
The tone is warm, observant and unmistakably South African. It allows the audience to recognise themselves before delivering the punchline.

Reflection
The copy is the part I am proudest of because it carries both the humour and the strategy. The connection between the product name, local language and the feeling of completing difficult work made the campaign feel natural rather than forced.
This project reinforced my desire to draw inspiration from inside South Africa. Familiar language can become a powerful creative device when it is used with care and connected to a genuine human experience.
